Policies

Reminder of Dress Code statute in Code of Conduct: “A student shall not dress in an obscene or suggestive manner or in any fashion that, in the judgment of the staff and/or administration, disrupts the educational process. See-through or mesh garments, midriff blouses or shirts, tank tops, spaghetti straps, exposure of under-garments of any type, spiked jewelry, chains, cleavage, low-riding pants, hats, and clothing with obscene or suggestive statements or symbols are prohibited as is any apparel that advertises or promotes sex, drugs, or alcohol. Shoes must be worn at all times. Coats and hats should be placed in lockers and not worn/carried during the school day.”

1st Semester:
We read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Students completed a Character Analysis outline and a Theme worksheet.

We wrote a formal 5 paragraph Character Analsis on one of the major characters: Jem, Scout, or Atticus.

We read the short stories, "The False Gems" and "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant

2nd Semester:
Students have learned about and used the techniques and devices of persuasion and propaganda to become more conscious consumers and write a persuasive essay.

We will:

  • read and analyze a play
  • work on poetry
  • read another novel

Ms. Hay will be out for the remainder of the year.  Ms. Sullivan is her long-term substitute and will continue with us through the end of the school year.  Her email is st_psullivan@smfcsd.org.

1st Semester:
We studied the parts of a short story.

We read "Two Kinds," "The Censors," "The Monkey's Paw," and "The Masque of the Red Death" from our textbook.

We wrote our own Scary short stories and Personal Narratives.

We read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

2nd Semester:
We completed a unit on Propaganda and Persuasion

Students learned and used the techniques and devices of persuasion and propaganda to become more conscious consumers and write and deliver a speech.

We also read and analyzed the play, "12 Angry Men."

We are currently working on a Poetry unit.

Quarter 4:

We have just finished The Hunger Games.  Test will be on Friday, May 4th.  Click here for the test review. You must complete any blanks and turn it in to get review credit.

Quarter 3:

We completed a reading unit using short stories from the text book to tie in grammar, sentence writing, and paragraph structure.  Students were given a grammar packet that we will continue to use. 

We read The Outsiders in class.  Students will not take the book home unless they sign it out due to absence.  We have questions that we review after each chapter.  I will post the answers after we discuss them.  Please refer to Progress Book, Homework tab for up to date suggestions.

Previous work:

So far we have read "The Most Dangerous Game", "The Cask of Amontillado", "The Necklace", "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", "The Speckled Band", "The Gift of the Magi", and "The Rule of Names"  in our textbooks.

We read Speak, a novel by Laurie Halse Anderson, in September and October.
Students have completed a literature terms worksheet based on the novel.
Students have completed a character analysis organizer and wrote a paragraph about the character of their choosing.
