Welcome to Mrs. Merz's WebPage!

Hello and welcome to my WebPage!

My name is Mrs. Merz.

This year I am teaching the following Family & Consumer Science courses:

Global Foods (Healthy Living - Special Studies - 091200)

Healthy Living - Special Studies is a special themed semester course that focuses on healthy living and foods across cultures.  Students will focus on acquiring and practicing a healthy lifestyle from various perspectives.  Students will learn to prepare and serve nuritious and appealing meals considering individual and family needs.  Students will assess links among food patterns, physical activity, sleep, weight, as well as research consumer and industry food related policies and practices in relation to sustaining the environment and ensuring adequate, secure food supplies.

Career Mentorship (Career Search II with Mentorship - 091401)

Career Search II with Mentorship is a semester course that prepares students for life after graduation.  A large component of this course is a required field experience placement with an employer/mentor in a business or organization related to the student's career goals.  This course open to juniors and seniors only.  Student must have reliable transportation to participate in this course, as they will be traveling to their mentor site on a regular basis throughout the semester.

Creative Cooking (Healthy and Safe Food - 091077)

Creative Cooking (Healthy and Safe Foods) focuses on behaviors related to acquiring and practicing a healthy lifestyle.  Students learn to shop smart, plan and prepare healthy meals using dietary guidelines; explore the cultural, family, community and economic implications of food patterns and behavior; and research the impact of public policy on the cost and safety of the foods they eat.

Child Development (Child Development - 091025)

Child Development focuses on the challenging concerns related to nurturing and caring for children.  Students discover how parents and childcare providers can meet the many developmental needs of infants and young children.  They investigate readiness for parenting, the functions and characteristics of strong families, and prominant theories of child growth and development.  They employ problem solving processes, interpersonal skills, management skills, and leadership skills to address challenges of rearing children in a diverse, global economy.  This is a semester long course with hands on projects and activities as well as a community service project.
