Are you a strong math/science student and know that a career in Engineering might be a good fit for you? Are you unsure what an engineer really does? Then you should attend the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Engineering Career Day on Saturday, April 28, 2012. ACAP-Ohio (Accounting Careers Awareness Program) is an exciting opportunity for minority high school students who are interested in pursuing a college degree to learn more about business and accounting careers. See your school counselor about this all-expense-paid camp opportunity at The Ohio State University this summer.

Start changing your future this summer! The Cleveland Clinic is offering three different summer internship programs for high school students. The program for 9th graders is for those considering a career in biomedical science, and programs for 10th and 11th graders are for those considering a career in health care or health care administration. These programs are 9-week, paid summer learning experiences that require students to work 40 hours/week alongside assigned Cleveland Clinic health care professionals. Are you a minority student grades 10-12 interested in becoming a physician, research scientist, or dentist? If so, see your counselor about applying for the Charles R. Drew Saturday Academy at the Cleveland Clinic.

GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship for seniors who embody leadership, drive, integrity and citizenship as did President Reagan. This is a $10,000 renewable scholarship!! Apply online through www.reaganfoundation.org/scholarships or see the Scholarship File in guidance. Deadline is Feb. 17, 2012.

State of Ohio's Kids Saffe Online Poster Contest for all students grades 9-12. Visit www.InfoSec.OHIO.gov for official rules and application. Deadline is Feb. 19, 2012.

Akron Urban League Scholarship for all seniors with a 2.5 GPA. Essay and a copy of FAFSA report from 2011 is required. See scholarship file for application. Deadline Feb. 24, 2012.

Buick Achievers Scholarship for seniors with community service who will major in engineering, technology, business, or design, or students with interest in the automotive industry. Apply online at www.buickachievers.com. Deadline is Feb. 29, 2012.

Ohio PTA Memorial Scholarship for all seniors. Scholarships are for students pursuing a bachelor's degree, students pursuing a two-year or technical degree, or for students who are presently on an IEP or 504 plan. Simon Youth Foundation Community Scholarship for all seniors. Applications can be obtained by visiting Guest Services at Aurora Farms Premium Outlets or download an application. Cavaliers and Majestic Steel Scholarships for students majoring in manufacturing at Tri C, Lakeland Community college, or Loraine Community College. See scholarship file for application. Deadline is March 5, 2012.

Through the Looking Glass Scholarship for seniors whose parent(s) has a significant disability or health condition. See the Scholarship File for application information. Deadline is March 5, 2012.

BioOhio Annual Scholarship for seniors who plan to pursue bioscience-related studies at an Ohio university. See Scholarship File in School Counseling for the website and information. Deadline is March 12, 2012.

The OACAC Charles L. Warren Memorial Heritage Scholarship for seniors from an underrepresented population who have a 3.0 or higher attending an Ohio university. Please see the scholarship file in the School Counseling office for the website to apply. Deadline is March 15, 2012.

Greater Akron Touchdown Club Scholarship for any senior who has lettered in one varsity sport during the senior year and who qualifies for athletic grants-in-aid at college attending. See Scholarship File for application. Deadline is March 20, 2012.

Firestone Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Scholarship for all seniors whose immediate family or grandparents have served in the armed forces. See scholarship file for application. Essay, brag sheet, and letters of recommendation required. Deadline is March 23, 2012.

First Annual Summit Endodontic Specialists Scholarship for seniors pursuing a career in dental, medical or a science-related field. See the Scholarship File for an application. Deadline is March 30, 2012.

Junior Women's Civic Club for all senior females. Students must be accepted by an Ohio college or university and show excellence in service and academic achievement, as well as financial need. See Scholarship File in School Counseling Office for an application. Deadline is March 30, 2012.

Fields of Learning Scholarship for all seniors. An essay is required entitled, "Something I learned related to high school football." Applicants are in no way limited to football players. Visit www.fieldsoflearning.org to apply. Deadline is March 31, 2012.

U.S Band Scholarship Forty $1,000 scholarships will be awarded through a random process. All seniors are eligible to apply at usbank.com/scholarship. Deadline is March 31, 2012.

Women's Network/Judith Resnik Scholarship for senior girls who are accepted into a baccalaureate program in science, engineering, or math and who have 3.0 Cumulative GPA. See the Scholarship File in the School Counseling office for an application. Deadline is March 31, 2012.

Campus Shift Scholarship for all seniors. The scholarship consists of free textbooks for first semester of student's college freshman year. An essay is required entitled, "How has the rising cost of college impacted my college choice?" Apply at www.campushift.com/scholarship. Deadline is March 31, 2012.

Ohio Newspapers Foundation Minority Journalism Scholarship for all seniors majoring in journalism at an Ohio college or university. Download an application at www.ohionews.org. Deadline is March 31, 2012.

William D. Squires Scholarships for seniors in significant financial need who have a 3.2 Cumulative GPA. Visit www.wmdsquiresfoundation.org to apply. Deadline is April 5, 2012.

Student-View Scholarship Program for all seniors. Visit www.student-view.com and complete a 20-minute application survey about colleges in your area to apply. Deadline is April 22, 2012.

Seniors, are you the son or daughter of a veteran or member of the American Legion? If so, you could be eligible to receive benefits for college in the form of scholarships or low-interest loans. See your school counselor to check out the "Need a Lift" CD that is available in the School Counseling office.

Credit Flexibility

Ohio Senate Bill 311 requires every school district in Ohio to offer students opportunities to earn high school credit outside of the traditional classroom experience.  Please see below the guidelines and forms related to opportunities for Credit Flexibility at Stow-Munroe Falls High School.  Interested students should first review the information found below and then see their School Counselor with any additional questions.

Also, throughout the school year, SMFHS will team up with Huntington Learning Center to offer students an opportunity to improve their skills on the college admission exams ACT & SAT. These practice tests are a great opportunity for students who haven’t taken these tests to understand what they are like. All tests begin at 9:00am at SMFHS and will last until approximately 12:30pm and are absolutely free. Students should check in at the main office doors.  Interested students should sign up for these tests in the Guidance Office to reserve a spot.  The practice tests dates for the 2011-12 are:

Local Scholarships

Senior students should check the daily announcements as well as the Scholarship bin in the Guidance Office for a wide range of scholarship opportunities received by our office.  Each spring, local clubs and organizations offer numerous scholarships to our graduationg seniors. These scholarships will be listed here beginning March 2012 for the graduating class of 2012.

Career Programs and the Six District Educational Compact

Every year, students at Stow-Munroe Falls High School take part in Career Programs that enhance their skills and prepare them for prospective careers.  These programs are available to students in grades 10-12 and students are given an orientation to these programs their Sophomore year during scheduling.  For more information, students should see their guidance counselor or visit the Six District Compact website at www.sixdistrict.com.
