WORLD HISTORY

This year in World History you will be studying from the Renaissance (1300) to the present day.  This will include units on the Renaissance and Reformation, Exploration, the Enlightenment, Absolutism/the French Revolution/and Napoleon, Industrialization and Reform, Imperialism, The Great War, the Inter-Years, World War II, the Cold War, and the Modern World.

In this class you will be required to complete quarterly assignments.  The first three quarters you will complete seven (21 total) of the tests in the Social Studies portion of Study Island.  This will prepare you for the Social Studies OGT (a graduation requirement) in March.  Fourth quarter you will read "First They Killed My Father" which is an autobiography of Loung Ung.  It is a story about her survival of the Cambodian genocide under the Communist regime of Pol Pot.  She now lives Shaker Heights, Ohio!

Most tests will consist of 50 multiple-choice questions.  40 will be assessing content, 5 will assess map interpretation, and 5 will assess chart interpretation.  There will also be an extended response.  An adequate extended response includes a thesis sentence, 3 supporting facts with explanation, and a conclusion sentence.  All possible essays are on ProgressBook.  You can write them ahead of time and bring them in for me to "pre-grade" them.  Knowledge Folders and Test Corrections are permitted for most tests.

The Midterm Exam will be a comprehensive exam of the first semester, while the Final Exam will be comprehensive of the second semester.  In order to be exempt from the Final Exam students must pass BOTH the Social Studies OGT and the course Midterm Exam.

This class will consist of lectures, discussions, debates, simulations, projects, reading, and writing. Some projects include the Renaissance advertisement, the Enlightenment greeting card, the ABCs of the French Revolution, the WWII scrapbook, and the Cold War Smithsonian Museum.

I have very high expectations for all my students and challenge them everyday in order to prepare them for the OGT, college, and life.  My hope is that you will fully understand the importance of history and how it shapes our current world.

GEOGRAPHY

In Geography we will study the five themes of geography and the different regions of the world.  The first quarter we focus on tools of geography, the Earth's insides and outside, landforms and bodies of water, internal and external forces on Earth, location, seasons and weather v. climate, and soils and vegetation.  The second quarter we focus on culture, religion, language, economy, politics, and human-environment interactions.

We end the course with a research project on a specific world region.  Each group will make a one-day presentation of their assigned world region.  This will end in a test over the world regions presentations.

Every Friday (or the last day of the school week) is Current Events.  Each student must bring in an article with a one paragraph summary and a one paragraph explanation of the event's importance.  These will be shared with the class.  Once we begin the World Regions project the students must find current events from their assigned region.

The Final Exam will consist of labeling world maps with major landforms, bodies of water, and countries.  There will also be a US map and students are expected to label all 50 states and capitals.
