Lots of Success for the Kimpton Science Olympiad Team
Science Olympiad is a national nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science, and providing recognition of outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. These goals are accomplished through training workshops, intramural, regional, and state tournaments, and a whole lot of personal effort.
This year’s team consisted of two 9th grade students (Kayla Andersen and Brett Bejcek), six 8th grade students (Teddy Byron, Emerson Cloud, Zach Fretag, Matt Leupold, Imran Minhas, and Michael Sisler), and three 7th grade students (Allison Brewer, Tommy Graham, and Blaise Marchetti). This was a group of hard working students who knew the meaning of teamwork! Although they did not advance to the state tournament, they came in a very respectable tenth place at the regional competition held at The University of Akron on March 6, 2010.
All of the students can be proud of their efforts this year. At the Mentor High School Invitational held on February 20th, Emerson Cloud and Matt Leupold came in 6th place for the Solar System competition. Kayla Andersen, Emerson Cloud, Matt Leupold, and Michael Sisler placed 8th in the Pentathlon event, which combines science knowledge and athletic skills.
At the regional tournament at The University of Akron, Kayla Andersen and Zach Fretag came in 1st place for the Ornithology event, as did Emerson Cloud and Matt Leupold on the Solar System event. Teddy Byron, Emerson Cloud, Matt Leupold, and Imran Minhas were in 4th place for the Pentathlon event. We came in 5th place on two events: Brett Bejcek and Emerson Cloud brought this home for us in the Bio Process Lab event and Brett Bejcek and Zach Fretag earned it in the Dynamic Planet event. Kayla Andersen and Brett Bejcek placed 6th in the Write It, Do It event. With all this success, it was hard to believe the team did not make it to the state tournament, but we are happy for the schools that do get to compete there.
To celebrate all the hard work and accomplishments, the team will have an all-day party at the Kent State Wellness Center on April 17th where they will swim, climb the rock wall, play basketball and eat lots of pizza and cake! Great job team!
