Veterans Day at Lakeview 11/11/11

Once again, Lakeview honored our Veterans and Active-duty Service men and women on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11. Our breakfast from 7:30 AM until 8:25 AM was full capacity! Our program begin at 8:40 AM in Lakeview's gym with keynote speaker, Retired Judge Randolph Baxter, an Army Vietnam Vet, who spoke of his time with the late Gen Donn Starry as well as what life has taught him of the makings of a hero. Karen Fritschel spoke to us for the last time as Mayor of Stow, as she will be retiring very soon. In the meantime, she advocates the everyday heroes who make their lives count for others. Stow Police Chief Dirker also spoke from his Marine experience that tends to color a lifetime in a hue called "Semper Fi!" Harold Rowland, with memories of his Korean War era, left us with an old-time patriotism that never loses its power. Ben Lang and Patricia Stofiel came in speaking further of the heroics evidenced since Iraq and Afghanistan; among soldiers and everyday people. These were moments of history lived and shared; very real experpts of lives well lived; personal moments of American history as well as a sense of compassionate community as one student, Ian Murray, shared how he lost his father, Sgt Jeremy Murray, to the war in Iraq. This was a special time of unity and Spirit, music, remembrance, singing, and a strong sense of American pride permeating throughout our period of recognition and celebration.

Pictures and bios of veterans and active military family and friends of Lakeview as well as Stow graduates were requested to be included in our presentation and were shown on screens during the entire assembly. The program was videotaped this year by Lowell Brockway of Just Perfect Videos. Thanks to his empathetic coverage, DVD's will be available at the end of the month. Also, 8" x 10" pictures will also be available by specific request. A donation of $10 is requested for the DVD, and $5 for the 8 x 10. You may RSVP at (330)-689-5250 or email at st_deitrick@smfcsd.org by Friday, November 18 to have yours in time for the holidays.

The Lakeview Veterans Day celebration is the project of our K-Kids and Klub USA along with a committee of parents and staff. Donations from community, parents, and staff are needed to make this possible. We are very proud of our Veterans and aren't afraid to show it! We also believe afterschool programs like ours are gifts of service we can teach our children, and they do make a positive difference in our world.

I need to add an apology to all who supported last year's fabulous enterprise of Veterans Day 2010. Videos were to be sent with the thank you cards, which is why they never went out. Something happened to the video of last year's program and it was never received by our office. If anyone who attended last year videoed or took pictures, it would be most appreciated if you could share them with us! Between then and now, our keynote speaker, 4-Star General Donn Starry succumbed to cancer on August 26, 2011. All those who attended last year were privileged to hear his final public speech... Thank you for all of your support in recognizing and celebrating all of our Veterans!

K-Kids and Club USA

K-Kids is an after school club which meets normally on the second Tuesday of each month from 3:00 to 4:00 PM in the Lakeview cafeteria. We are sponsored by the Stow-Munroe Falls Kiwanis Club. K-Kids is basically a service club in which students come together, work on projects to benefit community needs while being a safe, social situation.  We have worked with Briarwood Nursing Facility, Children's Hospital, St. Jude's, Good Samaritan, the domestic abuse shelter, as well as reaching out to victims of natural disasters such as a school in New Orleans after Katrina and last year's children in Haiti, among others.

Klub USA is now umbrelled under Kiwanis as well.  We have facilitated this group for students with family in the military, especially deployed members; or for students wishing to support our soldiers.  Our purpose is also service:  We are here to support and encourage our soldiers and cultivate patriotism in our midst.  Klub USA makes and sends cards, letters, and our annual "Treats 4 the Troops".  We also remember our veterans at the VA hospital with various uplifting crafts for the patients.

In 2009, our two clubs chose to come together to create Lakeview's first annual Veterans Day celebration of our heroes.  Mrs. LeMay assists by handling the music.   It is an exciting time to remember, to recognize, to inform staff and students of the true heroes in our midst.  We are solely dependent on donations with all funds utilized in club projects such as this big day.  All donations may be made to Lakeview Intermediate School with designated "K-KIds" or "Klub USA".
