Room Five recently had the opportunity to meet Mr. Tom Steffan to work on a Reader's Theater project,  With Mr. Steffan's help, the students began to work on their first project for this year.  As they continue to incorporate Mr. Steffan's strategies we are certain they will be ready to record a wonderful project for all to enjoy.  Please watch for information on how you can listen to the final project!

Paul Revere's Ride

The fourth grade students in Room 5 are pleased to present this PODCAST for your listening pleasure.

Second Grade Readers

The second grade readers are busy working on reading fluency.  They practice reading sentences in "chunks".  By reading 3 or 4 words at a time they have had greater success at identifying the main idea of a sentence and recalling the meaning of the sentences.

Another way to practice reading fluency is to read fun poems or to recite nursery rhymes.  Research has shown that increasing reading fluency (reading rate w/m) leads to greater comnprehension of the reading material.

Handwriting

It is important for good handwriting skills to be encouraged at a very early age.  Letters like "h, b, k, and l" should be formed by making the tall line the height of the space and by starting the line at the top.  It is also important to form numbers correctly.  I will provide a sample of the correct letter and number formation to everyone who contacts me.

Also, if you need ways to help your child improve his or her handwriting, please let me know.  I have a variety of pencil grips, spacers, and specially designed paper.

Reading

It is exciting to see the kindergarten students learning to read!  They are off to a great start.   Meanwhile, we have been stressing sight word recognition with the second grade.  Those little words are VERY IMPORTANT.  If you need sight word flashcards, please let me know and I will send lists home.
