SMFHS Students Help Senior Citizens Get Ready for Spring

April 26, 2011—Students at Stow-Munroe Falls High School and school district staff volunteers ventured into the community to help senior citizens living in Stow and Munroe Falls clean garages, pull out lawn furniture and accomplish other chores to help residents prepare for spring and summer months.

“The Spring Clean Up program, initiated through the Stow Senior Commission, was organized to assist senior citizens and allow students to give back to the older generation in their community,” said Kathy McConnell, assistant recreation supervisor for the city of Stow.

During the two-day Spring Clean Up earlier this month, students and their chaperones visited approximately 50 homes throughout both communities. Students were charged with various tasks for which the senior citizens requested assistance.

The partnership between the District and the City of Stow Parks and Recreation Department was formed last year to initiate programs that would benefit the community through intergenerational activities. This program is one of several that have allowed the students to interact with the older generation in their home town.

The senior citizens have embraced the students’ efforts. Seniors praised the program and the students’ work ethic.

“The seniors have given high marks for the program especially regarding how polite and kind the students were when completing the Clean Up. They hope this will be a yearly project.” McConnell added.
