January 26, 2012–The Ohio Elections Commission voted unanimously 6-0 today that the Stow Citizens for Responsible Government (SCRG), commonly known as “Stow Idiocracy”, made two false statements in campaign literature, either knowingly or with reckless disregard of the truth, during the course of the campaign for the November 2, 2010 general election. The Commission was comprised of three Democrats and three Republicans. The independent member of the Commission was not in attendance.
The Commission ruled that it was false for SCRG to make the statement that Superintendent Dr. Russell Jones’ tenure with the School District did not contribute to the District’s first ever “Excellent with Distinction” rating. SCRG stipulated to the fact that this was a false statement. Additionally, the Commission ruled that it was false for SCRG to make the statement that School District Treasurer Catherine Bulgrin “chose to ignore the previous board’s direction to apply for the Meritorious Budget Award.” The Commission determined this to be false after receiving testimony from Dr. Jones, Ms. Bulgrin, past Board members and SCRG representatives.
This marks the second time that SCRG was found to have made false statements. SCRG previously stipulated to making three false statements regarding the School District in March 2010.
“While we are pleased with the findings against Stow Idiocracy, it is unfortunate that we are forced to spend time and resources on matters like this,” said Jones.
The Stow-Munroe Falls City School District is rated Excellent by the Ohio Department of Education, an honor held by 215 districts out of 613 statewide.
