Two-Hour Delay will Go into Effect
STOW, OHIO—June 29, 2010—When the 2010-2011 school year begins, Stow-Munroe Falls City School District (SMFCSD) students, parents and staff can expect the number of calamity days, often referred to as snow days, to be reduced to three when inclement weather affects the regularly scheduled school day. As a result of House Bill I which was passed last year, this is a reduction from the previous five days allowed. If more than three snow days are used throughout the year, according to the legislation, the District is required to make up the additional days missed.
A make up schedule including any days beyond the three currently allowed will be added to the end of the school year. The Six District Compact schools, including SMFCSD, Kent, Hudson, Tallmadge, Woodridge and Cuyahoga Falls will implement a two-hour delay throughout the year when appropriate. The delay will go into effect when weather conditions are such that an additional two hours of work by road crews would make roadways safe for travel. When the two-hour delay is in effect, the regular school day will resume, as well as avoid excessive snow days.
“After much thought and consideration regarding the new requirement we, along with the surrounding school districts, felt this was the most efficient way to accommodate the reduction in allowable snow days,” explained Superintendent Russ Jones.
Two-Hour Delay Procedures
• During a two-hour delay scenario, all schools will begin the day two hours later than the normally scheduled starting time. For example, during a two-hour delay the high school will start at 9:30 a.m. rather than 7:30 a.m. All other buildings will begin the school day two hours after their regular start time.
• All morning pick-up times through the transportation department will be two hours later than regular scheduled times for students in grades K-8. Afternoon kindergarten and afternoon preschool students will be picked up at regular-scheduled times.
• There will be no AM kindergarten and no AM preschool.
• Transportation WILL NOT be provided for the Six District Educational Compact career programs.
As with school closings, the two-hour delay will be announced through the local media, the District’s telephone messaging system, Facebook and Twitter.
The Stow-Munroe Falls City School District is rated Excellent with Distinction by the Ohio Department of Education, an honor held by 116 school districts out of 613 statewide.
